“Hippocrates said that a woman’s womb is an animal within an animal.” It seems quite unbelievable to think that the father of medicine could say something like that, something that dehumanizes women to this extent.
However, we all know that this is not the first time that a man is talking about a whole gender like this. Nations, rather most nations at one point of time referred to and treated women as an inferior race. The power dynamics, rules, regulations, language, privilege - are all factors the societal systems historically.
A report from MedCo published last week notes that 25% of US women take meds for depression, anxiety, ADHD or another mental disorder. In men, that number is 15%. One article notes that more and more women have been prescribed anti-depressants in the past decade and that nearly twice as many women are on anti-anxiety treatment as their male counterparts.
Animal is a not-so-speculative sculptural artifact gifted from a man to a woman showing the woman her place in the society. Women are trophy pieces seen only
for their assets and irrational minds.
